Moderate: Requires good fitness for sustained trekking over uneven terrain and high altitude.
Experience one of Bolivia’s most spectacular trekking routes, the El Choro Trekking, a thrilling descent from the high Altiplano down to the lush subtropical Yungas region. Over three days, traverse ancient Inca trails, pristine cloud forests, and vibrant ecosystems rich in wildlife, including colorful birds and elusive spectacled bears. This moderately challenging trek offers breathtaking landscapes, cultural encounters, and a journey through diverse climates — from the cold puna grasslands at nearly 5,000 meters to the warm tropical forests below.
Available from April to October, this trek is accessible to most fit travelers and requires a minimum of two participants. Choose between a 2 or 3-day itinerary depending on your schedule and interests.
Your adventure begins early with a private transfer from La Paz to La Cumbre at 4,770 meters above sea level. From here, the trek starts ascending slightly to the Apacheta Pass at 4,900 meters, the highest point of the journey. Then begins a spectacular 7-hour descent through high puna grasslands into the mystical cloud forests of the Yungas. Along the way, you’ll pass the small Andean village of Chukara (3,750 m) and marvel at stunning natural scenery and native flora. You will stop for lunch en route. The day ends at the camp in Challapampa (2,800 m), where you’ll enjoy a well-earned dinner and rest overnight under the stars.
This day takes you deeper into one of Bolivia’s few remaining pristine cloud forests, located within the protected Cotapata National Park. The trail winds through narrow valleys filled with orchids, bromeliads, and towering trees. Keep an eye out for vibrant birds and butterflies, and if you’re lucky, a glimpse of the rare spectacled bear. After around 7 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at the camp near Río Jucumarini (2,600 m) to relax and enjoy dinner surrounded by nature.

From there, you’ll be transported by private vehicle to the charming town of Coroico, and then back to La Paz. Private transfers from Chairo to La Paz are available upon request.
